HLA-B27

Overview

The HLA-B27 test determines the presence or absence of the HLA-B27 protein on the surface of the white blood cells or the gene that codes for the HLA-B27 protein in each person.

Rationale

HLA-B27 test is a subclinical test that helps doctors diagnose ankylosing spondylitis, especially in cases where the presentation on routine X-rays is not clear.

In addition, the HLA-B27 test is a standard to support doctors in diagnosing the following diseases:

  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA)
  • Reactive arthritis (Reiter's syndrome)

Indication

Patients with suspected disease:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis;
  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis;
  • Reactive arthritis.
