Genetic counseling for Karyotype testing and gene panels for male and female infertility

According to a WHO report, approximately 17.5% of the reproductive-age population—about 1 in 6—experiences infertility issues, highlighting the urgent need to enhance access to high-quality reproductive healthcare services for those in need.

MsC and resident physician Nguyen Ngoc Nhat (Military Clinical Pathology Institute) shared at the talk show on genetic counseling, Karyotype testing, and gene panels for male and female infertility.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Nhat stated, “Infertility is the failure of a couple to conceive after one year of regular unprotected intercourse. Statistics and studies show that infertility is a social issue that is increasingly on the rise, especially in the current context. In the past, infertility was often attributed to female factors such as ovulatory disorders, anatomical abnormalities of the uterus, and fallopian tube blockages. However, in the last decade, many studies have indicated that approximately 50% of infertility cases can be traced back to male factors, including mumps, other medical conditions, sperm abnormalities, sperm density less than 5 million/ml, and azoospermia. Notably, the primary cause of these issues is genetic abnormalities.”

“Currently, genetic testing is an essential component of diagnosing and treating infertility. With advancements in technology and ongoing research, about 25% of previously unexplained infertility cases are now identified as potentially having a genetic basis. Genetic tests such as Karyotype, AZF, and Fertiscan play a crucial role in determining the underlying causes of infertility and guiding treatment for couples facing these challenges,” Dr. Nguyen Thi Huyen added.

During the discussion, the doctors promptly shared and addressed questions, helping physicians, experts, and couples hoping for children gain a better understanding of the causes of infertility in both men and women, as well as common tests used to evaluate these causes, such as karyotype testing and genetic mutation screenings. The talk show was a success, attracting over 500 views, many shares, and numerous questions from doctors, experts, and couples wishing for children.
